64th ARMOR LINEAGE AND HONORS
DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
 

Constituted 13 January 1941 in the Army of the United States as the 78th Tank Battalion

Redesignated 8 May 1941 as the 758th (Light) Tank Battalion

Activated 1 June 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky

The 758th Tank Battalion served with the 92nd Infantry Division in World War II, and was inactivated 22 September 1945 at Viareggio, Italy

Activated 1 August 1948 at Fort Knox, Kentucky

Redesignated 20 March 1949 as the 64th Heavy Tank Battalion, assigned to the 2nd Armored Division.

1950, the 64th Tank Battalion was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, and deployed overseas for combat operations during the Korean War.

1957, the 64th Tank Battalion was inactivated at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

3 April 1963, the 64th Armor was activated as a parent regiment under the Combined Arms Regimental System. All four battalions of the 64th Armor were assigned in Germany.

In 1987, the 1st and the 4th Battalions, 64th Armor, redeployed from Germany to Fort Stewart, Georgia and assigned to the 24th Infantry Division, while the 2nd and 3rd remained in Germany assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.

The 3rd Battalion dectivated 17 December 1993 at Schweinfurt, Germany as part of the 1st “Raider Brigade” 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized).

The 2nd Battalion was relieved 5 April 1996 from assignment to the 3rd Infantry Division when it reflagged as 1st Battalion 77th Armor "Steel Tigers" in Schweinfurt, Germany and assigned to the 2nd “Dagger Brigade” 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized).

The 1st Battalion is the 64th Regimental Headquarters and Fort Stewart is the home base.
